TPM caught up with Rick Santorum in the foyer of D.C.’s Omni Shoreham Hotel tonight following the flare-up over the anti-Mormon sentiments expressed by the pastor who introduced Rick Perry at the Values Voter Summit.
“I don’t believe it is,” Santorum said of the introduction given by Dr. Robert Jeffress, who contended Moromonism is a cult. “He’s allowed to believe what he wants to believe, I don’t believe that it is.”
When we ran into Newt Gingrich, he declined to weigh in. “I didn’t hear it, I’m not going to comment,” Gingrich said.
Jeffress was still hanging around the Values Voter Summit into the evening, telling TPM “there wouldn’t be any reason” for Perry camp to get in touch after his Mormon “cult” comment. He also clarified that the Family Research Council chose him to introduce Perry, not the Texas governor’s political team.
