Rove Group Ad Attacks ‘Professor Elizabeth Warren’ And Her ‘Intellectual Theories’

The Karl Rove-backed group, Crossroads GPS, has a new wave of ads attacking Democrats in key 2012 Senate races — including a particularly tough one against Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts.

The group’s press release says the total buy for the ads — running in Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska and Virginia — add up to $4.4 million. And as the Boston Globe reports, the Massachusetts buy alone is $596,000.

The anti-Warren ad takes up the state GOP’s running theme of tying her in an unseemly fashion to the Occupy Wall Street protests. As this new Crossroads ad puts it, Warren is a nefarious college professor and intellectual, too!

“Fourteen million Americans out of work. But instead of focusing on jobs, Elizabeth Warren sides with extreme left protests at Occupy Wall Street,” the announcer says — with the on-screen text calling her “Professor Elizabeth Warren,” in a split-screen with the protesters.

“Protesters attack police, do drugs, and trash public parks. They support radical redistribution of wealth, and violence. But Warren boasts, ‘I created much of the intellectual foundation for what they do’; ‘I support what they do.’ Intellectual foundation for what? We need jobs — not intellectual theories and radical protests.”

Also, here is the Crossroads ad in Missouri:

In Montana:

And in Virginia:

The ad for Nebraska is not yet up on the Crossroads YouTube account, but their press release says it will be available later on Thursday.

2012, American Crossroads, Ben Nelson, Claire McCaskill, Crossroads GPS, Elizabeth Warren, Jon Tester, Karl Rove, MA-SEN, MO-SEN, MT-SEN, NE-SEN, Occupy Wall Street, Senate, Texas, Tim Kaine, VA-SEN

I noticed right away that they tagged Warren as "Professor" in the first few seconds of the ad. You know what? Most of the people in Mass aren't going to mind that someone who is smart enough to be a professor is running to represent them. Anyone who perks up at this dog whistle isn't going to vote for Warren anyway.

I'd love to see a Colbert SuperPAC response to this: "If you don't want no stinkin' smartypants elected, vote for Scott Brown!"

Robert Watson, a high-ranking Republican state legislator in Rhode Island, is in hot water after being charged with driving under the influence of marijuana and possession; “trickle down” economics was first introduced. The idea was marketed as “ we give huge tax cuts to the wealthy and they will in turn re-invest in America and create jobs”; -- THE AD SEEMS TO HAVE CONFUSED REPUBLICANS WITH THE OWS GROUP.

Only relevant in this thread in the sense of illustrating the willful ignorance too common on the right, and which is too often a factor in elections:

I saw a bumper sticker today that said "From tiny ACORNs, mighty Marxists Grow"

So, there was someone who was (a) ignorant enough to believe such crap, and (b) stupid enough to put it on a commercial vehicle, thus advertising wherever he goes that his business is run by somebody stupid and ignorant.

It's a constant battle. We think it should be obvious to one and all that Warren would be far better than Brown, yet, bafflingly, those characteristics we see as part of what would make her an excellent Senator are seen by Republicans as points of attack.

Karl is wasting money big time. People can see for themselves. Too late for a smear campaign because not only did Warren lay out the issues so clearly in that YouTube video, people have also seen, experienced, know the Occupy Wall Streeters, a crowd of self-policed and very clever people.

Despite the smear efforts most people in the country agree with Warren and OWS,

But Karl and his ilk will continue to believe, as a Wall Streeter once was quoted in the NYT business pages as saying, "One dollar equals one vote."

That may be over: look at the wasted money in Ohio, for example. And how about Iowa NOT going the way the GOP planned? And how about Kentucky!!!???

HappyFeet 1008 pts

Oh, my gosh, a professor. Just as I suspected, Repubs and Teapers consider ignorance an asset and an education a detriment. What a slimy cretin Rove is. Oh well, S cott B rown, if you lie down with dogs, you are condemned to get fleas.

liam foote 205 pts

The GOP desperately needs voters who are confirmed independents or those leaning one way or the other, particularly in the swing states. Demographic assessments that I've seen indicatre that about two of three of OWS activists and supporters are mostly independent, not particularly enamored of either major party.

So it is beyond me as to why GOP ads continue to associate Occupy participants with crime, violence, drugs and radical politics. It seems like a page out of the Nixon - Agnew playbook villifying the "bums" involved in various aspects of the 60's counterculture.

GOP attack machine is always sleazy, but usually somewhat effective. With respect to their attacks on Ms. Warren, they are badly fooled by the pitch and continue to swing and miss.

Rove paid over a half a million $$$ for these ridiculous obviously misleading ads, filled with the hopeless grasping at straws in desperation Right-wing smears and talking points. Why?? Why pay all this money for that, and why pay it at all when you can catch these ridiculous ads for free on the internet?? Rove is notorious for lying, about a great many things,, no doubt about it. Maybe he should spend the money wisely and do some polling to see where the public really stands on these issues. Demeaning the OWS movement is not a wise move.

Flying Squid 23795 pts

LucieannD The 'genius' of Karl Rove has been GREATLY exaggerated. People seem to forget that Bush LOST the popular vote in 2000.

kunda311 956 pts

Flying SquidLucieannD Isn't that par for the course with Republicans? It seems they've been drinking their own Kool-aid for so long that they are truly incapable of seeing through their own folly. And here I'm hoping that's gonna cost them dearly this time around.

slb 1458 pts

Flying SquidLucieannD And that Karl Rove was predicting a Republican surge in 2006 (when he told NPR's Robert Siegel that he had "THE math").

slb 1458 pts

LucieannD Polling to see where the public really stands would only make sense if he were actually interested in where the public stands. He's not. He's not working for the public, he's working for the 1%. Remember when Bush told that guy in the crowd, "Who cares what you think?" He was only saying what he and his cohorts really meant.

I think I'm going to initiate a new drinking game, except without the alcohol. Or maybe in addition to the alcohol. Rather than (just) drinking when there's a new ad against Warren, I'm going to make a donation to her campaign. I expect there'll be a lot of ads so the individual contributions may not be that much, but every time I see an ad attacking her, she gets more money from me. I invite everyone to join in this game, whether or not you live in MA.

Those who denounce "the government" in a democracy are anti-democracy.

Those who denounce the press are opposed to transparency and therefore accountability and therefore are anti-democracy.

Those who denounce the facts are propangandists seeking to subvert accountability and therefore are anti-democracy.

accountability The GOP has exhibited plenty of anti-democracy traits, like wanting to take arms because a black man was democratically elected President. $4.4 million ad buy.

I wonder how many of the geniuses out there realize that everyone of these ad-buys is a tax on the economy. Every gallon of gas, every cleaning product, every thing they buy is more expensive because some management team somewhere decided that these ads a a legitimate business expense.
