A few years into his first term, President Obama still just doesn’t seem American to Stephen Colbert. And Mitt Romney’s campaign seems to agree, Colbert said Wednesday.
An anonymously quoted Romney adviser told the UK’s Telegraph newspaper that Romney would restore “Anglo-Saxon” relations between the U.S. and Britain. “We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser added. “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have.”
Now the media “gotcha-razzi” is going after the quote as a “racial code word,” Colbert said, as in “White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.”
“But Mitt’s campaign isn’t saying that he’s a WASP,” Colbert said. “They never said ‘white’ or ‘protestant.’ They’re saying he’s an ‘AS.’ A big one.”
